ARCA Menards Series
Southern Illinois 100
DuQuoin State Fairgrounds
August 31, 2019
Bret Holmes and the No. 23 Holmes ll Excavation team finished 10th at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds despite going a lap down in the early stages of the 100-lap affair. Holmes started the second and final dirt race of the season from the eighth position. The 22-year-old driver was running in the sixth spot on lap nine when he visited pit road for an unscheduled green-flag pit stop. Due to high humidity and track conditions, the grille on Holmes’ red Chevrolet became packed with dirt and caused an overheating issue. After pitting to clean the grille, Holmes was scored one lap down in the 16th position. The Munford, Ala., native worked his way into the 11th spot before receiving his lap back while under caution of lap 46. Holmes then moved into the 10th position on lap 62. With the racing groove narrowing towards the end of the race, Holmes was unable to advance his position before crossing the start/finish line.
Start – 8th Finish – 10th Points Position – 3rd
BRET HOLMES QUOTE:
“We had a great car this weekend. The (No.) 23 team worked really hard and brought a fast Chevrolet to the track. The track was watered down before the start of the race and caused a build up of dirt on our grille. Us, along with a handful of other teams had to pit much earlier than we wanted. We had to clean off our grilles to prevent our cars from overheating and blowing a motor. So, that left us pitting under green and losing a lap to the leader. We just couldn’t recover from it. Track position is so important at a track like DuQuoin (State Fairgrounds). You can’t afford to get behind early like we did.”
