Briscoe Finishes Fifth at Salem Speedway; Weatherman Awarded Calypso Short Track Challenge

Salem, Indiana – (September 20, 2015) – Cunningham Motorsports results at Salem Speedway weren’t exactly what they were hoping for. Many bright spots did occur as Chase Briscoe earned his first top-5 finish in his second ARCA Series start and rookie Kyle Weatherman was awarded the inaugural Calypso Short Track Challenge award.

The Cunningham organization brought three cars to the short track in Salem, Indiana, with Tom Hessert piloting the No. 77 Barbera’s Autoland Ford, Kyle Weatherman driving the No. 22 Crosley Brands Ford and Chase Briscoe in the No. 72 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge. Salem Speedway always presents on-track challenges, but this time the biggest challenge came from a shortage of Hoosier tires. The teams were only allowed four tires in their pits, so tire management became the biggest variable in the race.

Briscoe’s second Series start saw him qualifying seventh. He ran in the top-10 for the entire race, with the exception of restarting fourteenth after his pit stop for four tires just shy of the halfway point. Briscoe picked up numerous spots in the final 100 laps, finishing with his first top-5 finish of fifth.

Weatherman started from the pole position, after qualifying third. Pole winner Ken Schrader made unapproved adjustments to his car that relegated him to start on the tail of the field. Weatherman led the first 84 laps before falling backwards as teams started taking fresh tires. With 35 laps remaining in the 200 lap event, Weatherman pitted for his tires. Weatherman crossed the finish line in eleventh.

After the victory lane celebration completed, Weatherman was given the Calypso Short Track Challenge Award for the best overall finish in the ten ARCA Series short track races, with an average finish of 4th.

To say that Tom Hessert has had good results at Salem Speedway is an understatement with three victories in his last six Salem visits. The Federated Car Care Fall Classic 200 certainly didn’t live up to those standards as Hessert struggled throughout the entire race. He made an early pit stop for a wedge adjustment before taking his four tires just prior to the halfway point; finishing seventeenth.

Next up for the Cunningham organization is the Crosley Brands 150 at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Kentucky on Friday, September 25. Austin Cindric will join Hessert and Weatherman at Cunningham Motorsports for his second ARCA Series start. The lone practice for the one day event is scheduled for 12:30-2:00 EST, with qualifying at 4:40. The race will be live on Fox Sports 1 at 8:00.
